Open sparring weekend with British Army ‘a great success’

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

ABS National Coach Mike Keane has praised everyone involved over the weekend for the arranged open sparring between ABS boxers and the British Army Boxing Team. The event was arranged as part of the Army’s preperation for their Combined Services Championships but also gave the ABS Coaches the chance to have a closer look at the boxers hoping to represent ABS at future tournaments.

The sparring was held over two days with up to 17 well matched sparring bouts each day. Each spar was over 3×3 minute rounds, with some refereed by ABS referees George Brown and Ian Hyslop. Everyone in attendance remarked about the quality of all the boxers involved. The whole event was a success with the boxers themselves asking “when can we do it again”.

Army Head Coach Martin Anthony commented on the quality of the Scottish boxers and said it was ideal preperation for the army’s upcoming Championships in March.

ABS would like to thank all involved. The whole weekend was a great success, the sparring was highly competitive and benefitted everyone involved.

ABS Women Boxers G.B. Assessment Camp

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

ABS Women’s Coach Mark Geraghty reports on a G.B. Women’s Assessment Camp held in Sheffield on 3-5 February 2012:

Friday 03 February 2012

11:00 hrs – I arrived at the Etap Hotel in Sheffield with the following boxers;

Stephanie Kernachan 51kg Newarthill ABC

Kristen Fraser 54kg Granite City ABC

Katie Atkin 60kg Meadowbank ABC

Lorna Redfern of Inverness ABC was unable to attend due to personal matters.

The day commenced promptly at 13:00 hrs in the English Institute of Sport facility with a weight check, induction and some photographs being taken. Performance Director Bob McCracken, along with G.B. Women’s Coach Nigel Davis, outlined the format of the weekend and explained what they where looking for from the girls in attendance.

15:00 hrs – The groups split up into weight categorys then did a session which consisted of a 5 minute warm up, 5 minute partner work, 6 x 2 minute bag work themed, 10 minute stretch and warm down.

20:00 hrs – The second session of the day consisted of a 5 minute warm up, 6 x 2 minute technical spar,10 minute stretch and then a warm down.

Saturday 04 February 2012

07:15 hrs – The day began early with a weight check.

08:00 hrs – The girls were put through their paces with a half hour plyometrics circuit then were given advice and information on stretching, warm down and also the correct way to bandage hands. This session was taken by the G.B. Physiotherapist.

12:00 hrs – The afternoon session started with a 5 minute warm up by 4 x 2 minute themed shadow boxing, then strengh & conditioning circuits, followed by a very informative nutritional session which touched briefly on weight making issues. This session concluded with a 4 x 2 minute open spar.

19:00 hrs – The evening session was held at the English Institute of Sport and a video analysis session was held on generic international styles and boxers being adaptable.

Sunday 05 February 2012

07:15 hrs – The girls weighed in again then completed a session which consisted of a five minute warm up then a 20 minute strength & conditioning session which focused on the upper body, 4 x 2 minute technical spar then 5 minute stretch & warm down.

12:00 hrs – The final afternoon session was brief with a quick warm up followed by a 4 x 2 minutes open sparring session.

This was a very worthwile exercise and something that the girls thoroughly enjoyed. I have no doubt they will learn and develop from it. The feedback from G.B. on all three girls was positive and very encouraging. The conduct, effort and application from the girls throughout the was excellent.
