Open sparring weekend with British Army ‘a great success’

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

ABS National Coach Mike Keane has praised everyone involved over the weekend for the arranged open sparring between ABS boxers and the British Army Boxing Team. The event was arranged as part of the Army’s preperation for their Combined Services Championships but also gave the ABS Coaches the chance to have a closer look at the boxers hoping to represent ABS at future tournaments.

The sparring was held over two days with up to 17 well matched sparring bouts each day. Each spar was over 3×3 minute rounds, with some refereed by ABS referees George Brown and Ian Hyslop. Everyone in attendance remarked about the quality of all the boxers involved. The whole event was a success with the boxers themselves asking “when can we do it again”.

Army Head Coach Martin Anthony commented on the quality of the Scottish boxers and said it was ideal preperation for the army’s upcoming Championships in March.

ABS would like to thank all involved. The whole weekend was a great success, the sparring was highly competitive and benefitted everyone involved.

Pictures from the 2012 Intermediate Championships

Sunday, January 29th, 2012

Attached below are a selection of pictures capturing the action from the 2012 ABS Intermediate Championships held on 28 Janaury 2012 at the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility, Motherwell.

Over the course of the day, some 37 bouts were contested – 15 Senior Bouts in Ring One and 22 (mixture of Senior, Youth and Junior) Bouts in Ring Two. There were some very close, exciting bouts and fantastic boxing skills on display yesterday at the 2012 Intermediate  Championships. Also very encouraging was the fact the entries for the competition were up approximately 23% on the 2011 figure.

ABS would like to thank all boxers, coaches, officials and spectators in attendance for making the tournament a great success.

Drumchapel Cashback for Communities report

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

Cashback Coordinator Craig McEvoy visited Drumchapel High School on Friday 20th January 2012 to demonstrate a typical Amateur Boxing Academy session to Year 5 pupils during a PE session. The aim of the visit was to promote the ABS Cashback for Communities Amateur Boxing Academy throughout the school and to hopefully recruit some interested 10-19 year old young people for the local ABS clubs delivering the program.

The pupils in attendance were given a quick insight to the Academy, before being put through their paces with a typical Academy warm-up working on reaction and co-ordination.  This was then followed by a series of skill demonstrations where the pupils were coached on the basics of footwork and balance, followed by some partner games to put into practice what they had been taught.  The session finished off with a fun but boxing specific group game, the response from the pupils was positive and hopefully the visit will have created more interest for the Academy in the Drumchapel area.

ABS Cashback For Communties Update

Friday, January 20th, 2012

ABS Cashback Co-ordinator Craig McEvoy provides his latest ABS Cashback Amateur Boxing Academy update;

I have now visited a total of eight clubs participating in the Cashback Amateur Boxing Academy as we reach the end of the second week of the initiative.  Western District Clubs visited thus far are Linwood ABC, Greenock ABC, Argo ABC, Duries ABC and the Barn ABC, along with the Northern District Clubs Peterhead ABC, Lochaber Pheonix and Nether Lochaber ABC.

ABS is delighted to report that higher than expected numbers of young people, aged between 10 and 19 years old, have walked through the doors of their local amateur boxing club to take part in the sport for the first time.

Young people from all walks of life are now embracing and enjoying the free activities being provided through our boxing clubs, which in turn is helping to dispell some of the myths associated with boxing clubs prior to the launch of the Amateur Boxing Academy.

We also welcome Irvine Vineburgh into the Cashabck fold, who look set to be opening their doors to the potential starts of the future in the next week.

A big well done to all those involved thus far – keep up the good work!

A selection of images from sessions this week held  in Lochaber Phoenix ABC, Nether Lochaber ABC and Peterhead ABC can be viewed below.
