Final result 10-7 to Ireland. Overall this was a fantastic display from our boxers. As expected, our Irish opponents were typically dogged and tenacious but Scotland was always in contention.

It is testament to the ongoing work of the Development Squad coaches as to how far the boxers have progressed. At this stage last year a similar event was staged in Cork and the score was 14-2 to Ireland.

Huge credit must go to the boxers for their performances who have been a credit to ABS throughout the whole weekend, the coaches for preparing the boxers so well and Ireland for allowing ABS to travel and compete against such quality opposition.

Saturday, May 12th, 2012

ABS is pleased to provide the latest update on the seventeen strong Development Squad team competing against some of Ireland’s finest Juniors at the Rochestown Park Hotel in Cork on 12 May 2012.

The team arrived safe and sound at the recently built Cork airport at approximately 10.30pm on 11 May 2012. After clearing customs the team were met by AIBA representatives and shuttled by minibus to the luxurious Rochestown Park Hotel, the venue for this evening’s dual international. Once checked in it was off to bed for the team.

This morning, 12 May 2012, the team were up early for breakfast for 8.30am then a team meeting was held. Prior to breakfast weights were checked and everyone of the team was bang on weight. Following this our boxers were allowed to relax within the confines of the hotel until 11am when they took part in a light session in the grounds of the hotel. Following lunch and more relaxation time, the team re-convened for the weigh in and medicals which were all completed by 4.30pm.

A light lunch was provided at 5pm and then the team returned to their rooms for some final rest prior to the action commencing at approximately 7.30pm tonight.

In the meantime, here are a small selection of shots from today;

Malcolm McKenzie

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

ABS is saddened to announce the passing of Edinburgh Boxer Malcolm Mckenzie, on Sunday 06 May 2012, at the age of 68.

McKenzie, who boxed at lightweight, was born into a boxing family; his dad was an amateur, while his younger cousin, Tom Imrie, claimed gold in the light-middleweight division at the 1970 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh.

Such was the explosive nature of McKenzie’s power, he set a record in 1959 that remains un-equalled when he won two bouts that lasted a total of 50 seconds and gave him the junior eastern bantamweight title.

When his coach left Leith Victoria to join the new Granton based Buccleuch club, McKenzie followed and soon became embroiled in a rivalry that would go down in boxing history.

He and southpaw Dick McTaggart – a 1956 Olympic gold medallist – became household names in an era where amateur boxing featured regularly on TV.

McKenzie and McTaggart clashed a number of times, with the Leith boxer once coming within a second of knocking out his opponent, who was recognised as Scotland’s greatest amateur.

Our thoughts go out to all friends and family.
