Olympic Golden Gloves Estonia- Results from Day 1

Sunday, April 29th, 2012

ABS is delighted to report that Robbie McKechnie (Greenock ABC) and Joe Ham (Renfrewshire) have enjoyed day one wins as part of the GB Development team competing in the Olympic Golden Gloves Tournament currently taking place over the weekend in Estonia.

Robbie McKechnie v Ilja Andrejev EST

Robbie won 14:2 (Youth) – Round 1 saw Robbie take the centre of the ring and use his fast hands and variety of shots to open up a 1:0 lead going into round 2. The second round saw him use fast combinations and dodge his way out from being pinned on the ropes to increase his lead to 6:1 going into the final round. Using his fast jab down the middle, Robbie stuck to his boxing and increased his lead further, winning the bout 14:2.

Joe Ham v Aleksandr Bykadorov RUS

Joe won 7:6 (Senior) – The bout started with a high tempo from both sides, and it was level pegging at 1:1 going into round 2. During this round, Joe used his fast hands to score some good shots, however the russian entered the final round with a point lead. The final round saw both boxers looking to trigger and counter, however Joe kept his work rate up until his very last shot at the end of the round, which was the point that won him the bout 7:6.

Further results will be posted in due course.

2012 London Olympics Games – Josh Taylor Secures Selection for Team GB!!

Wednesday, April 18th, 2012

Further to the previous post, ABS is absolutely delighted to announce and confirm that Josh Taylor of Lochend ABC and Scotland has qualified for the 2012 London Olympics GB Boxing team in the 60kg weight category.

Earlier today, in without doubt the biggest fight of his career and the possibility of Olympic qualification one contest away, Josh destroyed his Armenian opponent Vladimir Sarukhanyan in his Quarter Final bout to progress to the Semi-Finals.

It was an outstanding performance from Josh who took control from the off building a 4-2 lead in the first with some clean hitting. The second round was a tempestuous affair with Josh adding just a single additional point to his lead before going into the last round. Josh duly saved the best til last and delivered some fantastic counter punching that led to an amazingly convincing 17-9 win.

However, England’s Sam Maxwell was also competing in a 60kg Quarter Final bout against shortly after Josh. Had the Liverpudlian won his bout against Turkey’s Fatih Keles then there would have been a box off between the two GB boxers unless one of them won 60kg Gold.

Maxwell gave a good account of himself and boxed well from the start but at each stage the judges favoured the Turk who took leads of 6-3 and 11-5 into the second and third rounds respectively. It wasn’t to be and final scoreline was 17-9 in favour of the Turk.

As a result of Josh boxing his way into the semi-finals and being the sole GB Boxer in the 60kg weight category, he has met the Olympic qualification standard and will represent Scotland and GB at the 2012 London Olympics.

ABS hopes the whole of the Scottish amateur boxing community will join it in offering both Josh, and his coach, Terry McCormack congratulations on this fantastic achievement.
