Drumchapel Cashback for Communities report

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

Cashback Coordinator Craig McEvoy visited Drumchapel High School on Friday 20th January 2012 to demonstrate a typical Amateur Boxing Academy session to Year 5 pupils during a PE session. The aim of the visit was to promote the ABS Cashback for Communities Amateur Boxing Academy throughout the school and to hopefully recruit some interested 10-19 year old young people for the local ABS clubs delivering the program.

The pupils in attendance were given a quick insight to the Academy, before being put through their paces with a typical Academy warm-up working on reaction and co-ordination.  This was then followed by a series of skill demonstrations where the pupils were coached on the basics of footwork and balance, followed by some partner games to put into practice what they had been taught.  The session finished off with a fun but boxing specific group game, the response from the pupils was positive and hopefully the visit will have created more interest for the Academy in the Drumchapel area.

ABS Cashback For Communties Update

Friday, January 20th, 2012

ABS Cashback Co-ordinator Craig McEvoy provides his latest ABS Cashback Amateur Boxing Academy update;

I have now visited a total of eight clubs participating in the Cashback Amateur Boxing Academy as we reach the end of the second week of the initiative.  Western District Clubs visited thus far are Linwood ABC, Greenock ABC, Argo ABC, Duries ABC and the Barn ABC, along with the Northern District Clubs Peterhead ABC, Lochaber Pheonix and Nether Lochaber ABC.

ABS is delighted to report that higher than expected numbers of young people, aged between 10 and 19 years old, have walked through the doors of their local amateur boxing club to take part in the sport for the first time.

Young people from all walks of life are now embracing and enjoying the free activities being provided through our boxing clubs, which in turn is helping to dispell some of the myths associated with boxing clubs prior to the launch of the Amateur Boxing Academy.

We also welcome Irvine Vineburgh into the Cashabck fold, who look set to be opening their doors to the potential starts of the future in the next week.

A big well done to all those involved thus far – keep up the good work!

ABS Cashback Amateur Boxing Academy hits new a high!

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

In the past few days, ABS Cashback Co-ordinator Craig McEvoy has been out visiting some of the clubs which have started providing free non-contact boxing sessions, thanks to Cashback for Communities funding, and has some amazing news to report.

The ABS Cashback programme is very much in its infancy and only half way through its second week of operation. Yet, no fewer than 150 young people aged between 10 and 19, and completely new to Amateur Boxing Scotland, have taken part in the free diversionary activities provided by through these sessions.

Even more remarkable is the fact this update only covers seven of the eighteen clubs involved so far. ABS anticipates numbers will grow significantly more in coming weeks as more clubs embrace and commence the delivery of free Cashback sessions and record participation levels. Attached below are a selection of photos from a Cashback session held in the Lochaber Phoenix Gym in Fort William on 17 January 2012;

ABS Cashback for Communities Amateur Boxing Academy Update

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

With Christmas and New Year now distant memories, Monday 09 January 2012 witnessed the launch of the ABS Cashback for Communities Amateur Boxing Academy programme with free non-contact boxing sessions being delivered by ABS coaches throughout the country.

After the initial press release on 19 October 2011, and subsequent Cashback presentations in December 2011, no less than 18 ABS registered clubs have embraced the programme and are now actively recruiting young people aged 10 -19 within their local area to take part in free non contact boxing training.

Amazingly some clubs have witnessed unprecedented numbers turning up for the sessions. The best example of this was Lochaber Phoenix ABC which had no less than 40 young people turn up for their first session in the 10 – 12 yrs category this week.

The interest shown already, after a relatively short promotional period, demonstrates the huge potential this programme has for increasing participation and growing the sport of amateur boxing in Scotland at the hugely important grass roots level.

A big well done to all those clubs and coaches involved with the programme and for their input to the Academy thus far.

Anyone with an interest in the ABS Cashback for Communities Amateur Boxing Academy programme should direct their queries to Craig McEvoy, ABS Cashback Co-Ordinator, on 07974 302782 for further information.
