2010 Scottish Senior Boxing championships

The finals of the 2010 senior amateur boxing championships were held in the Time Capsule, Coatbridge last night and the show itself was run with precision that would have done justice to a professional presentation. The packed to capacity sports hall had atmosphere from the fans of the respective boxers and the stage management of the event is credit to all involved from ABS Ltd. Ten bouts with one of them a female bout which would have graced any show with the skill shown by both girls.

Champions names in bold

Female Final

Bout 1   Female 64Kg

G Brodie (Renfrewshire)

Brodie came out with a high guard style trying to jab and hook her way in, but Atkin was having none of it and landing the better right hand shots. Both girls were of a very good standard using a large variety of shots, but Atkin just landing a bit more to run out a worthy winner! (I bet there is no man out there that would say it’s not my turn to do the house work) A bit sexist there Mick! Both girls can feel proud of their final.

K Atkin (Granite City) Pts 4-10

Mens Finals

54Kg

J Ham (Renfrewshire) won Pts 4-1
These young men were club mates at one time, so must have sparred loads of rounds at one time or another. Ham was working well on the back foot and Thompson walking in with a high guard trying to deliver body shots, but Ham was keeping the bout at arm’s length using his speed and movement. It was 2-1 for Ham going in to the last round, meaning Thompson had to push a bit harder but doing so got caught with a couple of shots by Ham (it was Thompson’s 3rd final in a row and Hams first senior Scottish)
J Thompson (Denniston) Pts

57Kg

J Slowey (Denniston) won Pts 8-4

The first defending champ from last year, Slowey takes a 4 – 0 lead in the opening round. Rd 2 ends 6-2 to the Denniston man. With this in mind O’Neil’s corner men tell him to push with all he has in the final salvo, and he does! However, Slowey’s fast hands and smart foot work make it hard for O’Neil to nail him down. Slowey wins his second Scottish title

C O’Neill (Greenock)

60Kg

S Dick (Paisley) and the Army
This was a fighter against a boxer with Dick being a strong fighter just moved up to this new weight. He (Dick) normally boxed at the 57k division in the past and was up against last year’s champ at 60kilo. Smith (who most people know him as the Bear) this nick-name must be something to do with being cute! Since he was far too cute and smart for the ever pressing man from the Army,  but to be fair to Dick he landed some nice left hooks to the body and should have got more points for his endeavours. The result was right in the end though, Smith getting his second national title in a row and also being awarded the best boxer of the night for the President’s Cup award.

R Smith (Barrhead) Pts 3-15

64Kg

J Easton (Craigmillar) won Pts 8-4
McGinn won the opener by 2 points with a few shaped hooks, but in the second round Easton must have be told by his corner “You need to work son!” and that’s what he did winning the round 4-3. As both corners get the scores between rounds, both boys just try to out punch each other and get to told by the ref to clean it up a bit! Both were hitting and holding, with no one wanting to give in. I’m sure these two will meet again and what a year it’s been for Easton, his first senior season and now the champion at 64kgs.
D McGinn (Cleland)
69Kg

R Hamilton (Hillpark)
This one could have been held in a phone box, it was toe to toe from the first bell with round one ending level at 3-3. In the second round Hamilton just took a 2 point lead 7-5 with both boxers using non- stop punching.  Thompson must eat Mexican food or has Mexican blood in his veins as he just keeps going and gives Hamilton a standing count in the final round and maintains the pressure till the last bell. This bout was never silky, but it more than made up for that with heart, determination and mind-boggling stamina.
G Thompson (Stirling)won Pts 10-12

75Kg

S Finney (Kingdom)
Finney was last year’s 69kilo champ  and won the opener by a score of 3-1 in this 75kilo final. However, the advancing pressure put on him from Peacock in the second meant it ending level with a score of 4 each. The final round and Peacock is in no mood to mess about with the younger man Finney, who seemed to tire dramatically, and Peacock just add more pressure to run out a worthy winner.

B Peacock (Barrhead) Pts 4-7

81Kg

K Bruce (Kingdom) won Pts 9-5
Bruce got off to a flying lead in the opener the Fifer being 4-1 up. Hartley came back at Bruce in the second salvo, winning it 2-1 to make the score 5-3 to Bruce going into the final round. Again, the corners are telling their boxers to “Get out there and win this!” Bruce took that information on board and yet Hartley pushed him all the way.

S Hartley (Alloa)

91Kg

J Cook (Denbeath)
Both these big hitting guys won their semi finals with stoppages, and everyone was expecting fireworks, it never really came though. For two big men who’re both good movers and thinking boxers with heavy hands, it had that sense of potential drama and that’s why it was engrossing throughout and the highest scoring bout of the night. It may not be as fast with the foot work and hand speed as the lighter weights, but it was good to watch two big men box. Drummond was landing just that bit more effectively with good two punch attacks and Cook was trying to win this bout with his jab going forward. I suspect Cook gave Drummond just a wee bit too much respect, but who wouldn’t bearing in mind what the Dundonian had done in his semi-final with Kubas.
D Drummond (Lochee) Won Pts 10-20

91+Kg

M McDonagh (Port Glasgow)
The score suggests this was a one side affair, not so though as McDonagh was giving height and weight away to this giant of a man Cornish. McDonagh gave a good account of himself by trying to work to the much taller man’s body, but was being hit on the way in. Cornish scored the points and McDonagh’s inside work was not spotted by the judges.

G Cornish (Inverness) WON Pts 1-13

A very successful show which was well run and congratulations to everyone involved not least being the boxers who produced great performances all evening.
